From Beaches to Waterfalls: Plan the Perfect Family Holiday in Lombok
Get ready to pack your bags and grab the sunscreen because we’re heading to Lombok! The perfect destination for families who want to experience everything from pristine beaches to breathtaking waterfalls.
With so many activities and attractions on offer, planning a family itinerary in Lombok can seem overwhelming. But fear not, because we have put together all the tips and tricks you need to plan an unforgettable adventure that will keep everyone happy – no matter their age or interests.
Beaches
From swimming and sunbathing to surfing and bodyboarding, Lombok’s beaches have something for everyone.
Tanjung Ann and Selong Belanak are family favourites, miles of white sand beach for the little ones to run around and build sand castles, crystal clear waters for swimming and playing in the waves makes for a perfect day at the beach. They both offer plenty of shade, sun loungers and local eateries to keep the family fed and watered.
Selong Belanak beach break is ideal for the kids (and grown ups) to try their hand at surfing for the first time with plenty of board rental options and instructors available right on the beach, or simply grab a bodyboard and have fun in the waves. Don’t miss the perfect family photo opportunity at sunset when the local buffalo herd as they make their way home along the shore!
Shopping
Fancy a break from the beach or want to keep the little ones entertained on a rainy day? Head to the Epicentrum mall in Mataram. Here you’ll find plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants, along with the familiar Starbucks and Burger King. To keep the kids happy you’ll find Timezone arcade, where they can spend their time on the bumper cars, arcade games for all age ranges, and for the very small ones there are a couple of indoor soft play areas to keep them busy. But that’s not all, the Epicentrum is also home to a cinema showing the latest international blockbusters (in English) don’t miss out on Premier screen, where you’ll have your own fully reclining lazy chair with a blanket and waiter service straight to your seat!
Waterfalls and Rice Terraces
Ready to head back to nature? Hire a driver for this 1.5hr drive from Kuta where you’ll find the charming town of Tetebatu, home to Lombok’s rice terraces and waterfalls, think Bali’s Ubud 50 years ago. Embark on a walking tour with a private guide (catered for all ages) and walk through lush landscapes to see beautiful rice terraces, swim in waterfalls, spot the monkeys through the monkey forest (don’t worry, they’re shy and won’t steal your belongings!) and re-charge with a coffee or fresh coconut whilst enjoying panoramic views of Mount Rinjani before heading back to Kuta for dinner or stay the night at one of the many Homestays.
Gili Islands
Our favourite for families is Gili Air as its more quiet and laid back than it’s bigger neighbour Gili T and a has a little more going on than it’s smaller romantic neighbour Gili Meno. With great snorkelling right off the beach or organised snorkel trips (how many turtles can you spot?) and plenty of family friendly restaurants and accommodation makes it an ideal destination for 1-2 night stay. There are no motorised vehicles allowed on the island so cycling, foot or horse and cart will be your mode of transport!
Camping
If you’re looking for some respite from the heat, venture further north to the cooler temperatures of Sembalun.
Nestled between stunning mountains, the village sits in a valley at the base of the mighty Mount Rinjani.
Head here for a night or two of camping or glamping at our favourite camp, Snajang Glamping, where tents, bedding and everything else is already set up for you. So you can spend the day strawberry picking at one of the many pick your own fields, exploring the surrounding countryside and spotting hikers on Mount Rinjani. Enjoy dinner back at the camp or in one of the many cafes in town before heading back to your own campfire and stargazing.
